Overview
Machame, known as the “Whiskey” route, is a popular route to the mountain. Compared with Marangu, the days on Machame are longer and the walks are steeper. It is considered a difficult route, better suited for more adventurous folks, and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. Machame approaches from the southwest and descends using Mweka, rewarding climbers with views of the expansive Shira Plateau.

8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb Itinerary – Machame Route
You will be picked up by the staff of Pori Adventures and Safaris from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and driven to your accommodation in Arusha. Participants will be given a short briefing for the climb the next day. Kits and the necessary equipment will be checked as well.

Accommodation: Sg Resort – A simple and comfortable hotel located in Arusha, offering private ensuite rooms, local cuisine, and a quiet environment to prepare for the upcoming climb.
After breakfast, we will pick you up from your Hotel in Arusha and drive for 1 hour to Machame gate (10,000 ft) for registration. Here you will meet the rest of the crew (Cooks and Porters) and we shall all prepare for the climb. We will start the climb through rainforest and the giant heathers for 6 hours until we reach our first overnight camp.

Accommodation: Budget camping – Tents with foam sleeping pads provided. Experience your first night on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro surrounded by lush forest.
This will be a short day but rather a steep, rocky, and dusty trail. It’s a slow hike with plenty of breaks and enough time to acclimatize. Most of the route is bare of vegetation, providing little shade. You will cross many ridges and see the first of many Senecias.

Accommodation: Budget camping – Camp on the Shira Plateau with vast open views and an impressive night sky.
We will start climbing over boulders and very few rocks, then make our way to a steady uphill climb to Lava Tower where we stop for lunch. For those interested, we may climb the Lava Tower (14,850 ft). From there we descend for about 2 hours to Barranco Camp at 13,000 ft.

Accommodation: Budget camping – Scenic camp below the Barranco Wall, great sunset views.
We start scrambling up the Barranco Wall for about an hour and a half. At the top of the wall, you can see the Barranco valley and your previous campsite. Continue through the green Karanga Valley, the last water point on the route.

Accommodation: Budget camping – Nestled in a sheltered valley surrounded by alpine desert terrain.
This will be a short but steep uphill climb across barren landscape with many boulders. You will see the Decken Glaciers to your left. The final ridge requires scrambling for about 1.5 hours to reach camp.

Accommodation: Budget camping – Windswept camp at high altitude on rocky terrain. Early rest before summit push.
Climb begins at midnight. You ascend steep, rocky terrain into a snow-covered area, eventually reaching Stella Point. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak (19,370 ft) for sunrise. After a short rest and photos, descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp.

Accommodation: Budget camping – Final overnight stay on the mountain in the forest zone at Mweka Camp.
Today’s descent takes 4–5 hours to the park gate. After receiving your Kilimanjaro certificate, enjoy a picnic lunch, thank your mountain team, and drive through the Chaga villages and coffee plantations back to Arusha for rest and celebration.
